Big Thunder Mountain Refurbishment Nears Completion with New Rainbow Caverns

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad remains closed for an extensive refurbishment that includes new track, new ride vehicles, and a brand-new Rainbow Caverns scene. The new cave section features glowing phosphorescent pools, shimmering rockwork, and illuminated formations beside the initial lift hill.

The "crevasse-deep to mountain-top" rebuild has been one of the most comprehensive ride refurbishments in Magic Kingdom history. The projected reopening is late March or early April 2026.

The Rainbow Caverns addition pays homage to Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland, the original Rainbow Caverns attraction at Disneyland that inspired Big Thunder Mountain. Disney fans have long requested this callback, making the addition a crowd-pleasing surprise.
