Aerial Photos Show Universal Upgrading the Ultrasaur and Baby Stegosaurus Animatronics in the Jurassic Park River Adventure Refurb

Universal's long Jurassic Park River Adventure refurb has been one of the more closely watched theme-park projects of 2026, mostly because Universal will not say much more than "closed for planned maintenance." Aerial-photo coverage has been doing the talking instead. The latest round, published by Orlando ParkStop on Monday, June 29 with aerial photos credited to @bioreconstruct, shows two specific animatronic upgrades inside the ride.

The headlines:

  • Attraction: Jurassic Park River Adventure, Universal Islands of Adventure.
  • Closure: Closed January 5, 2026. Scheduled to reopen November 20, 2026 (about 10 months).
  • Aerial findings (Orlando ParkStop, June 29):
    • Ultrasaur (the long-necked sauropod in the opening lagoon scene): "a new, clean white armature has been installed for the neck of this Ultrasaur animated figure."
    • Baby Stegosaurus: "This stegosaurus has seen its face skin removed to upgrade its head's moving elements."
    • Adult Stegosaurus: "appears to be missing at this time."
  • Branding stays: The ride will remain "Jurassic PARK" rather than convert to the Jurassic World brand.
  • Universal's official line: "closed for planned maintenance," no detailed announcement.

What the entrance work tells us

Disney Dining's separate June 28 dispatch picks up the exterior scope: "Large portions of the familiar tan shingles have disappeared, exposing the black sheathing underneath while some decorative green roof tiles remain near the top of the building." The Jurassic Outfitters gift shop next door is also getting fresh weatherproof sheathing. Disney Dining reports that sections of the ride track are being replaced too, describing it as another significant piece of the attraction's extensive refurbishment after 27 years. Inside The Magic calls the roof replacement "only the latest chapter" in what it describes as "one of the attraction's largest refurbishment efforts in years."

Why this matters

Jurassic Park River Adventure is one of the original Islands of Adventure rides, dating to the park's 1999 opening. Universal has confirmed the ride keeps its Jurassic Park branding instead of being rethemed to the newer Jurassic World films, so the work here is about preserving the original IP and its sightlines, not replacing it. The Ultrasaur is visible from the queue and from the boat in the opening lagoon scene, which is why the armature work shows up clearly in aerial photos.

Universal has not published a list of what is being changed, but the combined aerial evidence (Orlando ParkStop) and ground-level coverage (Inside The Magic and Disney Dining) now confirms at least three classes of work: animatronic mechanism upgrades, entrance and adjacent retail roof replacement, and ride-track replacement. That is consistent with the roughly 10-month window.

Quick planner notes

  • Jurassic Park River Adventure reopens November 20, 2026. If you are visiting Islands of Adventure before then, the ride is closed and the boats are not running.
  • The rest of the Jurassic Park land at Islands of Adventure (Pteranodon Flyers, Camp Jurassic, Jurassic Park Discovery Center) is open. Pteranodon Flyers is scheduled to reopen from its own short refurb on July 2.
  • If you want a sense of the in-ride scenes that are getting work, watch ride-through videos from before January 5, 2026 - the opening lagoon Ultrasaur and the Stegosaur clearing are the most visible animatronic moments early in the ride.
