Pain and Panic Vanished From the Boo-To-You Parade This Year, and Cinderella's Stepsisters Are Dancing in Their Place
For years, one of the odder sights in Mickey's Boo-To-You Halloween Parade sat at the back of the Skeleton Band float, where Hades' two henchmen from Hercules danced behind the musicians while locked inside dark metal cages, glowsticks in hand.
The cages went away a while ago. The glowsticks stuck around. And now, for the 2026 run of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, Pain and Panic themselves are gone. In their place on that rear platform: Cinderella's stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella, dancing in full ball gowns with nothing to wave. WDW News Today words that carefully, saying the stepsisters "appear to have taken their place," which leaves room for one night's lineup being a temporary arrangement. The stepsisters are not new to the parade either. Blog Mickey logged Anastasia and Drizella joining the parade's villains section back in 2023, so what changed this year is where they stand.
Taken by itself that reads as an ordinary character swap, and WDW News Today is careful to frame it that way first. The outlet's argument is that it only looks meaningful set against older versions of the parade, describing it as possibly the last in a long run of edits that have softened the show for families.
Worth saying plainly: Disney has not announced any of this, has not explained the change, and has not tied these edits together. The through-line is WDW News Today's reading, not a stated Disney policy, and the outlet's own opening line softens that flat headline to "may have quietly ousted."
What actually changed on the float
In their earlier appearances, Pain and Panic danced behind the Skeleton Band trapped in dark metal cages, holding glowsticks. WDW News Today notes the cage imagery fits the pair's underworld home well enough on its own, but reads the glowsticks as tipping the picture toward something closer to go-go dancers in cages. The cages stayed in use for years. In more recent parades the pair turned up without them, glowsticks still in hand. This year, with Pain and Panic themselves out, WDW News Today reports "no cages or glowsticks in sight."
The Hoedown lost its cowgirls too
The parade's Frontierland unit, the Halloween Hoedown, went through a similar quiet edit. Earlier performances had supporting cowboy and cowgirl dancers, and the cowgirls wore fitted Western tops with boots and denim cutoffs short enough that WDW News Today calls them Daisy Dukes.
By 2023 the Western dancers, male and female alike, had been dropped. Scarecrow performers took their place, in straw and overalls rather than denim and cowboy hats. The Country Bears kept their usual spot, though the unit did shuffle. Blog Mickey noted that year that Goofy moved in to anchor the Hoedown, taking over from Clarabelle Cow, who went up front as a Sanderson Sister.
And the Redhead left the parade entirely
The Pirates of the Caribbean unit lost a walking character too. In earlier versions of the parade, the Redhead joined the street-level performers in her original design from the ride's auction scene, in a low-cut dress. She was pulled from later parades entirely, and the character herself was separately redesigned, a change that debuted at Disneyland Paris in 2017 before reaching Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Park in 2018.
So is the parade worse now?
That is the fun part of this story, and it is genuinely a matter of taste. None of the retired bits would land as scandalous anywhere but inside a Disney park, and the Headless Horseman still opens the night, riding the route a few minutes ahead of the floats. But a parade that once had cages, cutoffs and a low-cut auction dress is, in WDW News Today's phrasing, "considerably less cheeky" than it used to be.
Whether anyone besides the people who have watched it fifty times will notice Anastasia and Drizella standing where Pain and Panic used to is another question entirely.
