Disney Is Sending a Crate to D23 That Has Been Sealed for a Century, and Imagineering Says It Does Not Know What Is Inside

Disney is promoting one of its D23 panels this week with a sealed crate that, by its own account, nobody at Imagineering has opened.

In a post published Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the Disney Parks Blog announced that the Society of Explorers and Adventurers, the fictional club Walt Disney Imagineering has been quietly threading through its parks for decades, is turning up at D23 in the Imagineering Pavilion. The crate is the hook.

"One crate unearthed from the archives, unopened for at least a century, is making its way to D23," Disney wrote. "But, the surprise is...neither Imagineering or S.E.A. has any clue what's inside!"

The panel is Friday, and it is the opening day of D23

The presentation is called "An Inside Look at the Society of Explorers and Adventurers." Disney says D23 runs from August 14 to 16 and puts the panel on August 14, which is this Friday, the first day of the event.

Disney is careful to promise very little about what actually gets said in the room. The Society "might (emphasis on might!) discuss some enigmas which even eluded the Society," the post says, before name checking the Voynich manuscript and the Burning of the Library of Alexandria as the company it would like the crate to keep.

Where the crate supposedly came from

The in-story explanation is an archivist with a backlog. Disney says an S.E.A. archivist has spent the last three months working through the Society's entire artifact collection, turning up forgotten pieces of its own history: "intricate Greek amphoras from Lord Henry Mystic or 'acquired' sarcophagi courtesy of Harrison Hightower III."

Those scare quotes around acquired are Disney's, not ours. Hightower is the Society member whose habit of taking artifacts that were not his to take is the premise of Tokyo DisneySea's Tower of Terror, the 2006 attraction he headlines, so the joke is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Disney applies the same wink to the headline item, calling it a "newly rediscovered" artifact, quotation marks included.

The detail Florida readers should zoom in on

Disney published the Society's Global Headquarters map alongside the announcement, and that is where Walt Disney World turns up. The map is not a first look. WDWMagic notes that a 2021 Disney Insider episode already laid out the Society's full timeline and its global headquarters map. The map is drawn as a folded, sun yellowed chart with outposts pinned in France, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Hawaii, California, Castaway Cay and Florida. A legend along the bottom decodes the icons: artifact vault, global controls, archives, tech lab, airship docking, rocket launch bay, time train station and nautilus docking.

The Florida pin sits at 28.3852 degrees north, 81.5639 degrees west, coordinates that land inside Walt Disney World property, and it carries four of those icons: airship docking, nautilus docking, rocket launch bay and time train station. California, drawn as the busiest outpost on the board, gets all eight.

You have walked past these people already

Disney names Mary Oceaneer, Dr. Albert Falls, Lord Henry Mystic, Camellia Falco and Hightower in the post, and describes Falco as "an avid aviator who invented her own devices to further humanity's understanding of flight." It also nudges readers toward the physical breadcrumbs: "you might've even spotted oars with their members' names and notable expeditions engraved on them!"

For the Magic Kingdom crowd, Dr. Albert Falls is the one to know. WDWMagic, tracing the storyline's milestones, notes that Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen opened at Magic Kingdom in 2015 and introduced him, and that a 2021 Jungle Cruise refurbishment brought in another member, Doctor Kon Chunosuke.

Disney puts the Society's own beginnings "as far back as the 1500s" and traces it to what it calls "the mythic Fortress Exploration; its earliest known headquarters." The motto, per the post, started as "Exploratio continua," or continued exploration, and now travels with "wonder, explore, and discover."

If you are not in the room on Friday

Disney says the fallback is social. Imagineering "will be updating the Walt Disney Imagineering Instagram with every detail," according to the post, which is the only place Disney points people who cannot attend. None of Disney's announcements gives a start time for the panel, and it is not one of the six D23 events Disney confirmed on August 10 that it will stream live on Disney+.

Whether the crate contains a genuine announcement or a very well art directed prop is the part Disney is not saying. Disney's only stated position is that neither Imagineering nor S.E.A. knows what is inside.
