Disney World's monorail is playing updated narration, and it now asks riders not to vape

Riders on the Express monorail, the nonstop line linking the Transportation and Ticket Center with Magic Kingdom, are hearing something new. The onboard courtesy announcement now asks guests not to vape.

WDWMagic reported the updated narration track on Wednesday morning, August 26. The outlet singled out one change above the rest: vaping has been folded into the courtesy line that already asked guests not to smoke. Riders now hear: "For the comfort of others, no smoking or vaping please, thank you."

A familiar line has been coming and going

The vaping update is not the only difference riders may notice. WDWMagic reported that the classic Jack Wagner announcement asking guests to stand clear of the doors, delivered in English and then in Spanish, has not been playing consistently, and was absent on the outlet's ride Wednesday after playing the day before.

WDWMagic did not describe the new track as finished, noting it is unclear whether the audio is done or still being worked on.

Tom Kane voiced the monorail for fourteen years

Tom Kane had been the voice of the Walt Disney World Monorail System since April 2012, a run of more than fourteen years. WDWMagic noted the change comes shortly after his death.

Kane died on Monday, May 18, at 64. His representative, Zach McGinnis, confirmed the death to TMZ. Kane died at a hospital in Kansas City with family present, and the cause was complications of a stroke he suffered in late 2020.

Beyond the monorail, Kane narrated the Magic Kingdom nighttime spectacular Happily Ever After. He voiced Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, Boba Fett and Qui-Gon Jinn in a range of Star Wars animated series and games, and he was Professor Utonium in The Powerpuff Girls. He was also a frequent guest at Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

McGinnis said in a statement at the time: "Though his voice may now be silent, the characters, stories, and love he gave to the world will live on forever."

How the new track was made is not clear

WDWMagic said it remains unknown whether the new audio came from a voice actor or from generative AI.

If the recording really is still being finished, what riders hear on the beam this week may not be the version that sticks.
