Universal's Jack & Oddfellow House Ends on a Tilted Floor at Halloween Horror Nights 35, and the Left Hallway Is the Stable One

Universal published a behind-the-scenes walk-through of its Jack & Oddfellow haunted house on Wednesday, and one paragraph near the end is the practically useful part. The house ends in a room the company calls the Tilted Hallway, built on a lopsided floor, and Universal says there are two ways through it.

The tip, in Universal's words: "If you'd prefer more stable ground, there are two hallways in this area. If you take the one on the left, you'll encounter all of the same scareactor fun with a more accessible route."

Universal has published two Behind-the-Screams entries for this year's event, and this is the only one carrying that kind of guidance. The other, on H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!, went up six days earlier with no equivalent note. Looking further back, four earlier entries in the series, covering houses at the 2025 and 2023 events, contain no accessibility routing either. The "pro tip" device itself is routine on Universal's blog, mostly in its planning guides. Using one to flag a route inside a haunted house is not. As of this writing no other outlet has picked the detail up, so for now it rests on Universal's own post.

Why the floor is tilted in the first place

The Tilted Hallway is the finale. By that point in Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control, guests have passed through a vortex into the Oddverse, the pocket dimension Universal describes as the source of Dr. Oddfellow's power and the place where Jack Schmidt is kept inside his box. Universal's post describes the closing room as a swirling vortex with a lopsided floor, with scareactors hidden in the corners and video effects running across the surfaces.

Senior show director Charles Gray told the company's blog that "Video plays a huge role in this house," and separately that "The sound and the visuals are married together in a very interesting way."

What Universal did not say

Universal's wording is brief, and several practical questions are left unanswered.

• It does not define what "accessible" means here. Universal wrote "more accessible route" and "more stable ground," not wheelchair accessible, and the post does not reference the resort's rider or guest assistance policies. The event's Know Before You Go page does carry an accessibility section, but it covers queue accommodation through the Attractions Assistance Pass, not physical routes inside a house. As written, the tip describes a steadier walking route rather than a published accommodation.
• It does not say whether the split is marked. There is no mention of signage, a lit indicator or a team member positioned to point guests left. Whether the split is signed or staffed is not addressed, so guests who want the left route may need to know about it in advance.
• It does not say whether the paths rejoin. Universal says the left route has all of the same scareactors, which implies parity, but the post does not state whether anything scenic is skipped or where the two hallways meet.
• It sits outside Universal's warning system. The company's only event-wide advisory is the all-caps notice that Halloween Horror Nights may be too intense for children under 13. Universal already has language for exactly this kind of effect, including "not recommended for Guests susceptible to motion sickness or dizziness" along with strobe and fog warnings, but it lives in the Rider Safety and Accessibility guide and is posted on ride warning signs. That guide does not mention the event, its houses or its scare zones anywhere. The lopsided floor is described in a blog post and nowhere else.

The gap is wider than this one house. Universal's official page for the event's ten houses carries no warning icons and no accessibility notes of any kind, and the resort has never published whether its haunted houses admit wheelchairs, or whether guests using electric convenience vehicles have to transfer at the door. The guidance that circulates on those points comes from other sites and from guests who have been through, not from Universal. Anyone who needs a firm answer before the event opens should ask Universal's guest services directly.

Branching paths are not new here

The route itself is less unusual than the way Universal described it. Split paths have shown up at the event before. Terrifier, at last year's event, put a decision point in front of guests where the left branch avoided a practical blood effect. Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate, at the 2023 event, ran a full fire and ice branch with multiple endings, and coverage at the time treated it as the first real split since Hellgate Prison in 2004. Tilted and angled floors have their own history in houses including Scary Tales, Dead Waters and Seeds of Extinction.

What is different is the framing. Those earlier splits were presented as part of the show, a choice with a payoff. Universal is describing this one in terms of stability and access, and putting it in writing before opening night rather than leaving guests to find it in the dark.

The rest of the walk-through

The house opens on a carnival scene with bloodied bunk beds, where Jack Schmidt is painting his face with stolen clown makeup. Universal says the story is narrated, starting from Dr. Oddfellow's point of view before Jack takes over, with the two trading off as they tell the story of their rivalry. The company notes that narration is not always included in its haunted houses.

Guests then watch Oddfellow force Jack into the box, where Jack fights back and takes on Oddfellow's powers, before the vortex room opens the way into the Oddverse. Universal lists churning hallways and a personal game show hosted by Jack the Clown among the scenes that follow. There is also a scent effect: the post says the smell of popcorn is used to evoke the carnival.

Scenic designer Dylan Kollath said the house reaches back to Dr. Oddfellow's Twisted Origins, the icon house at the 2023 event, for material. "We had a brief glimpse at Jack and Oddfellow's backstory in the Dr. Oddfellow Twisted Origins house, so elements of that are woven through this one," he said. "But we wanted to take the aesthetics of both Jack and Oddfellow ... and have them clash and blend with each other." He added that "it was a surprise to us how out-of-the-box the ideas became when we brought them together."

Why this house in particular

The route detail lands on a house positioned for heavy demand early in the run. Universal confirmed in late July that Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control is one of three houses opening at 2 p.m. for guests who buy the Scream Early add-on, alongside Stranger Things 5 and Hellraiser, as we reported on July 29. Universal's press release referred only to "select haunted houses"; the three titles came from the event guide and were reported by WDW News Today and Blog Mickey. It is also the house built around the two icons Universal has made the face of the event, which points to heavy first-night traffic.

The premise itself is not new. Universal announced on March 21 at MegaCon Orlando that Jack and Dr. Oddfellow would return for the event, and the house description released that day already said the pair stop fighting and join forces. A press release five days later called them "the ringmasters behind all the scares." Gray put the same beat this way: "Jack and Oddfellow have been warring with each other for years and years. But they finally decide that fear divided is fear diluted. By coming together with their chaos and control, joining together, they could remake this world."

Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs 48 nights at Universal Studios Florida from August 28 through November 1. Universal has not said which venue holds the house, though permit trackers place it in Soundstage 22.
