Epic Universe Confirms First Major Expansion as Park Earns Four Thea Awards

Universal's Epic Universe has barely celebrated its first birthday, but the park is already growing. Construction permits filed with Orange County confirm that 150,000 square feet of new development is underway on one of the park's built-in expansion pads within Celestial Park — and all signs point to a major addition to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

A New Harry Potter Experience Takes Shape

Public construction permits identify the project as "Area P905" — an internal code that corresponds to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic. The permit covers site utilities and foundation work at 1001 Epic Blvd, with a completion target of May 7, 2026 for the infrastructure phase.

Aerial photography from @bioreconstruct has documented the progress since late 2025:

  • December 14, 2025: Dirt work and land leveling observed in Celestial Park
  • January 6, 2026: Construction walls appeared around the site
  • February 2026: A permit for construction trailers was filed near the Harry Potter expansion area

The expansion site sits between Other Worlds Mercantile and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, directly across from Moonship Chocolates & Celestial Sweets. The location is strategic — Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry regularly sees 6- to 8-hour wait times during peak periods, and additional capacity in the Wizarding World is desperately needed.

Universal has not officially confirmed the Harry Potter expansion. In a notable moment in February 2026, a Comcast press release described "expanding Universal Epic Universe," but the word "expanding" was quietly removed from Universal's version of the statement shortly after — generating significant media attention.

However, Universal Orlando President & COO Karen Irwin has been clear about the park's trajectory:

"We're already planning for the next thing at Epic."

A Separate Event Venue Is Also Coming

A second project, coded P915, describes a $20.6 million event space spanning approximately 53,886 square feet within Celestial Park.

The venue will feature a hexagon canopy roof design with LED lighting, a stage configuration, and capacity for up to 1,400 guests.

Universal has also confirmed plans for permanent fireworks launch sites and a transportation tunnel system connecting Epic Universe to the rest of the resort.

Four Thea Awards — An Industry Record

Alongside the expansion news, Epic Universe earned an unprecedented four Thea Awards from the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), more than any single park has received in a single year. The 32nd Annual Thea Awards Gala will take place on May 2, 2026 at JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes.

The awards recognize:

  • Outstanding Achievement — Theme Park: Universal Epic Universe
  • Outstanding Achievement — Theme Park Land: How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk
  • Outstanding Achievement — Ride Experience: Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
  • Outstanding Achievement — Attraction: Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment

Former Universal Creative Vice President Dale Mason, instrumental in developing The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Volcano Bay, received the Buzz Price Thea Award for a Lifetime of Outstanding Achievement.

Growing Pains Continue

Stardust Racers, the park's dual-track launch coaster, has had its closure extended through at least March 14, 2026 — already pushed back twice from its original February 22 reopening date. Universal has described the downtime only as a "refurbishment."

The entire Dark Universe land is excluded from Early Park Admission through March 31.

Ride reliability issues across the park are cited as a key reason why annual pass access remains unavailable at Epic Universe. Comcast co-CEO Mike Cavanagh explained that as "ride flow and capacity ultimately gets to its maximum potential," Universal will then "grow capacity, which will then unleash more attendance possibilities."

Industry analysts suggest annual passes including Epic Universe are unlikely before August 2026 at the earliest, with January 2027 considered a more realistic target.

Record-Breaking Demand

Despite the growing pains, demand for Epic Universe remains extraordinary.

On January 2, 2026, the park set its all-time attendance record with an average wait time of 86 minutes — the highest recorded at any Orlando theme park since at least 2019.

By 11:00 AM that day, virtually every ride had waits exceeding two hours, and both Donkey Kong Mine-Cart Madness and Battle at the Ministry stopped accepting standby guests well before park closing.

Epic Universe is a park that has proven its appeal in spectacular fashion. The expansion signals that Universal is betting big on keeping that momentum going — even before the park's first anniversary celebrations begin in May.

Universal Files Permits for a 71,500-Square-Foot Building in Epic Universe's Dark Universe

Something big is taking shape in the spookiest corner of Epic Universe. A new permit filing points to a building of roughly 71,500 square feet planned for the heart of Darkmoor Village, the classic-monsters town inside the park's Dark Universe world, with Stantec Architecture listed on the paperwork. That footprint is on par with full attractions at Epic Universe, like the Mario Kart ride and the Untrainable Dragon show, so this is no gift shop. Universal will only say that permit filings are routine and that it has no further details to share, which leaves the fun question wide open: a new monster ride, a theater, or something else entirely?
