Four Tom Sawyer Island Tributes Are Hidden in the Piston Peak Model, and Imagineering Wants to Rebuild the Barrel Bridge From Pieces of the Original

The Rivers of America is drained and Tom Sawyer Island is gone, but Walt Disney Imagineering says it wants to put a physical piece of the island back into the land that replaced it.

WDW News Today, reporting from D23 this weekend, says the barrel bridge planned for Piston Peak National Park will be rebuilt as faithfully as the team can manage, and that the intention is to reuse pieces of the real thing: "Imagineers told us they will construct the bridge as close to the legacy bridge as possible, actually using pieces of the original bridge if they are legally allowed."

That is one of four tributes to the demolished Frontierland attractions that WDW News Today spotted hidden in the land model Imagineering put on the D23 show floor. Disney describes it as "a stunning 19-by-19-foot model" and says the model offers a look into the new land, plus the first look at its second attraction.

Tribute 1, Fort Langhorn. The building sitting directly behind the Miss Fritter demolition derby attraction carries design elements lifted from Fort Langhorn, the log fort that stood on Tom Sawyer Island. Its features included a rifle roost, a guard house, a blacksmith barn and a secret escape passageway.

Tribute 2, the Mike Fink Keel Boat dock. WDW News Today sets a model photo, shot from roughly where Big Thunder Mountain Railroad stands, next to a picture of the keel boat building taken before the river was drained. The match is in the details: the wood beams across the front, the shed dormer roof, and the cupola on top. The attraction was named for Mike Fink, the "King of the River." Its boats were free floating, and it closed in April 2001.

There is a small letdown buried in this one. Fans have long speculated that something would be added back in that space behind the neighboring attraction queue, a bar or parlor in the style of the Disney Cruise Line ships, or extra queue space for the days when the line spills into Liberty Square. WDW News Today puts that to bed: "However, it is neither of those things." The site says the building is a new restroom, the same structure it matched to the keel boat dock.

Tribute 3, Harper's Mill. WDW News Today says the model structure "very closely resembles" the original. Harper's Mill was the water powered gristmill on Tom Sawyer Island, itself a nod to Disney's 1937 short The Old Mill. The Piston Peak version keeps the shape of the building and swaps the machinery: where the water wheel used to turn, there is now a giant tire with Lightyear lettering on the sidewall. The site describes the piece as a large brake rotor. Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater sit under the awning, which WDW News Today suggests could be a meet and greet spot.

Tribute 4, the barrel bridge. On Tom Sawyer Island this was, in WDW News Today's words, a "bouncing, floating walkway" of wooden planks strung across a line of large barrels. It is also the tribute Imagineering says it wants to build using pieces of the original, if it is legally allowed.

WDW News Today was also told the four are not the whole list. Guests should expect more, smaller homages scattered through Piston Peak, plus detail work aimed at holding on to the general spirit of what the land replaced.

What else the model shows. WDW News Today says its wide shot of the model looks at the land from the Tiana's Bayou Adventure side, with Liberty Square beyond the snow covered mountain. The off road rally race ride will run mostly around the perimeter of the land, with ride vehicles given individual personalities. The second attraction stars Miss Fritter, the undefeated demolition derby school bus from Cars 3, mud spattered and armed with a spinning saw blade and a sharpened stop sign, who runs down her rivals at the Thunder Hollow Speedway. Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, an original car character named for the human ranger J. Audubon Woodlore from 1950s Disney cartoons, turns up in the queue.

Piston Peak National Park was first announced at D23 2024. It takes its cues from real national parks and the American West, the Rocky Mountains, Yosemite and Yellowstone in particular, and its name is borrowed from the Planes: Fire & Rescue spin off. A river, waterfalls and geysers are all planned, and Imagineering has said it is watching sightlines so that piston shaped mountains do not turn up in the background of Liberty Square.

Disney has not announced an opening date for the land.
