Disney Drained Echo Lake at Hollywood Studios, and the Only Explanation Is a Sign on the Fence

The centerpiece lake of the Echo Lake area at Disney's Hollywood Studios has been drained. Not drawn down a few inches for cleaning, all but emptied, leaving a wide rust and cream stained basin, a black hose running across the bottom, and a wide puddle still standing in the lowest part of the bed.

WDW News Today published photos on Saturday and reported that Echo Lake "is almost completely drained." What Disney has said about it amounts to one sign.

That sign is the whole announcement

The placard is written in the park's in-universe voice, a mock city notice, with a seal showing the Chinese Theatre. It says the lake is being refurbished. It does not say what is being refurbished, or for how long.

In WDWNT's words, "Disney has not announced how long Echo Lake will be drained or the nature of the work." Disney has not put a reopening date on the lake anywhere we can find.

The boat is sitting on dry ground

Dockside Diner, the quick service kiosk built to look like a steamship tied up at its dock, normally has water right up against its sides. In the photos the ship sits on bare concrete, its red lower hull exposed all the way down to the lakebed, with the squat concrete pedestals that normally sit underwater, cables still running off them, left standing exposed on the bed beside it.

Gertie is fine, and she has had a year of it

One thing has not changed: Gertie is open for business. Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction, the life-size dinosaur shaped building at the lake's edge, "remains open and operating normally," per WDWNT.

Gertie has already had one bad year. Her tail broke off earlier in 2026, Disney tried covering the damage with boxes, and the tail was eventually fixed. Now the water in front of her has been pumped out.

The building is a reference to Gertie the Dinosaur, the 1914 Winsor McCay animated short. WDWNT describes Gertie as "the first animated dinosaur and one of the first animated characters ever."

Where this sits in a park that keeps changing

Echo Lake anchors its own themed area. For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration plays on one side of it, 50's Prime Time Cafe and Hollywood & Vine sit on another, and the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular closes off the third side.

That corner of the park has been busy. We reported in July that crews had pulled a large tree from a fenced work site near Backlot Express for a project called Fedora, permitted since the spring and never publicly explained by Disney, sitting right next to the Indiana Jones stunt show. Draining Echo Lake is a separate job, and nothing published so far links the two. But anyone watching this end of Hollywood Studios now has two work sites in the same corner of the park, neither of them explained in any detail.

Our read, and it is only a read, is the dull one. Large decorative bodies of water have to be emptied at some point so crews can reach the basin, the pumps and the plumbing, and the sign here uses standard refurbishment wording rather than anything hinting at a bigger project. Disney has confirmed none of that. Draining a lake this size is just more visible than most maintenance.
