Disney Lifts Embargo on Monstropolis: Suspended Door Coaster + H.U.M.A.N. Day Backstory Revealed

Disney walked select outlets through the Monstropolis construction site at Hollywood Studios on June 4 and dropped a coordinated embargo lift across major fan sites. The reveals are the most substantial Monsters Inc. land details yet, and they confirm a first-ever Disney suspended roller coaster with a first-ever vertical lift through "the door vault" as the marquee attraction.

The headlines:

  • First-ever Disney suspended roller coaster with a first-ever vertical lift through "the door vault."
  • Land setting: post-Monsters Inc. film, on "H.U.M.A.N. Day" (Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice), organized by a new in-universe Department of Human Relations.
  • Harryhausen's replaces Mama Melrose with a "giant chopsticks holding an eyeball" facade lifted directly from the film.
  • Glob Theater replaces MuppetVision with a new Monsters show.
  • PizzeRizzo becomes a counter-service spot.
  • Imagineers cite Shanghai's Zootopia land as the design template.

The suspended door coaster

Per Disney Tourist Blog and Theme Park Insider's embargo-lift coverage, the ride uses a novel loading system: riders sit in seats hanging from a detached section of track that then locks into the ride path. The vertical lift sends the suspended seats up through "the door vault," a key Monsters Inc. plot device. From there, the ride threads through Monstropolis scenes featuring characters and references from the original film.

It is the first suspended roller coaster Disney has ever built and the first vertical lift on any Disney coaster. Per Disney Tourist Blog, Imagineers cited Shanghai Disneyland's Zootopia land as the design benchmark for its IP-narrative emphasis and integrated set work.

H.U.M.A.N. Day and the in-universe story

Disney set the land after the events of Monsters Inc., when monsters and humans coexist. The conceit:

  • "H.U.M.A.N. Day" is the official holiday celebrating that humans understand monsters are nice.
  • A Department of Human Relations organizes the holiday and acts as the in-universe operator of the land.
  • Guests visit Monstropolis as honored humans rather than the threat the monsters once feared.

The framing gives Imagineers cover to integrate humans into the land's sightlines without breaking Monsters Inc. world rules.

Food and entertainment changes

  • Harryhausen's replaces Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano. The restaurant features the "giant chopsticks holding an eyeball" facade from the film's sushi-bar scene, which marks the first time the film's visual gag has been built in physical form at a Disney park.
  • Glob Theater replaces the existing MuppetVision 3D building, with a new Monsters Inc. show. The MuppetVision 3D experience closed in 2025 along with the surrounding Muppets Courtyard.
  • PizzeRizzo, the Muppets-themed counter-service spot, transitions into a counter-service location for Monstropolis.

What Imagineers said

Imagineers led the June 4 hardhat tour. Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter and Imagineer Michael Hundgen previously discussed Monstropolis at the SXSW 2025 "Future of World-Building at Disney" panel, where they unpacked the suspended-coaster concept and the post-film story setting. Docter's involvement signals Disney is treating Monstropolis as a Pixar-led land design.

Timing

Disney has not announced an official opening date. Recent precedent: Encanto land at Animal Kingdom announced a 2027 cast signing window. Monstropolis is likely tracking to a similar or later debut, with 2028 as the most plausible target window per fan-reporter analysis.

Quick planner notes

  • If you're a Muppets fan, MuppetVision 3D is gone. PizzeRizzo and the Muppets Courtyard footprint are transitioning. Plan around what's remaining at Hollywood Studios if Muppets nostalgia matters.
  • If you're a Monsters Inc. fan, the Laugh Floor at Magic Kingdom stays in the meantime. Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios is the IP's big land bet.
  • The Magic of Disney Animation indoor experience is opening in the Animation Courtyard / Walt Disney Studios footprint. Monstropolis is a separate land sitting in the Muppets Courtyard footprint.

Disney's Wilderness Lodge Battles a Days-Long AC Outage During a Central Florida Heat Wave

A stay at one of Walt Disney World's flagship Deluxe resorts is not supposed to come with a box fan, but that has been the reality for some guests at Disney's Wilderness Lodge this week. The main building's central air conditioning has been down since Thursday, June 18, just as Central Florida sweltered under back-to-back heat advisories with feels-like temperatures topping 105 degrees. By Monday, June 22, Disney had trucked in temporary chillers and portable spot coolers and many guest rooms had cooled back down, though the Grand Lobby and some interior spaces stayed warm, and the central system was not yet fully restored. Disney has not commented publicly.

Universal Files Permits for a 71,500-Square-Foot Building in Epic Universe's Dark Universe

Universal Files Permits for a 71,500-Square-Foot Building in Epic Universe's Dark Universe

Something big is taking shape in the spookiest corner of Epic Universe. A new permit filing points to a building of roughly 71,500 square feet planned for the heart of Darkmoor Village, the classic-monsters town inside the park's Dark Universe world, with Stantec Architecture listed on the paperwork. That footprint is on par with full attractions at Epic Universe, like the Mario Kart ride and the Untrainable Dragon show, so this is no gift shop. Universal will only say that permit filings are routine and that it has no further details to share, which leaves the fun question wide open: a new monster ride, a theater, or something else entirely?
